Introduction:

Lugu Lake, at the border of Yunnan and Sichuan, is home to the Mosuo people. This tribe practices a matriarchal system. Women are the heads of households and children belong to the mother’s family. Their unique culture has been regarded as "the last quaint Realm of Matriarchy" by scholars and specialists throughout the world. In their practice of ‘walking marriage’, when a couple fancy each other, the man will sneak into the woman’s bedroom to spend the nights. If the woman gets pregnant, her family raises the baby. There are no strings attached and no need for ‘real’ marriage.

Yading is located in the Gantze prefecture of western Sichuan. Yading was a part of the Kham Tibet and it is well known amongst local Tibetans for the three holy mountains of Chenresig (Avalokitesvara, 6032m), Jambeyang (Manjusri, 5958m), and Chanadorje (Vajrapani, 5958m). These three peaks were blessed in the 8th century, when Buddha Padmasambhava shed his divine light on the range, and named the three elevations after three bodhisattvas. They are voted by the Chinese National Geography magazine (2005) as the 6th most beautiful mountains in China.

Trekking from Lugu Lake to Yading surely is one of the most unique routes with both breathtaking views and a memorable touch of Mosuo Culture.
